Podkrepa is a social organization founded in 1939 to help inroduce Bulgarians and Macedonians in Portland, Oregon to their new country - USA. In more recent years, our organization adjusted to unite Bulgarians, Macedonians, American Macedonians and American Bulgarians and to promote Bulgarian and Macedonian educational and cultural activities.
Podkrepa is a charitable organization - indeed, our charter and bylaws forbid any political or religious endorsements or discussions.
Any adult of good character, who was born or lived in Bulgaria or Macedonia, is a descendant of a Bulgarian or Macedonian, or is interested in supporting the promotion of Bularian or Macedonian culture is invited to join Podkrepa.
Bulgarian-Macedonian Assn. - Podkrepa Portland (PDX)
In the summer of 2016, the Macedonia School Project will begin its third year of coordinating interested American volunteers in providing conversational English to Macedonian students. The program’s goal is twofold: to provide volunteers with a meaningful, quality experience in Macedonia while supporting aspiring Macedonian students in improving their English language skills. See attached flyer for printing out this information.
Qualifications: Experienced or retired teachers or college level students interested in teaching and gaining a cross-cultural experience. Others comfortable in school classrooms are welcome to apply.
Costs: Air-flight is approximately $1,800 to reach Ohrid, Macedonia (from Portland OR) which is the responsibility of the volunteer. Program cost is $600 for a 2-week experience (mid-June/mid-July). The program costs cover accommodations, Macedonian teacher and interpreter time and supplies. No funds go to the Macedonia Schools Project. Since the MSP is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization your costs may be tax deductible
Accommodations: Volunteer costs cover housing with a local Macedonian family within walking distance of the school and includes breakfast each day.
Transportation: MSP hosts will meet you at the Ohrid airport or bus station and provide transportation to your housing.
Teaching environment: The MSP will provide students, classrooms and a qualified Macedonian teacher/translator to work with you to ensure the highest quality experience for you and the students. They will also assist you in developing appropriate lesson plans to suit the program participants, students and teachers. All students involved will have some knowledge of English but need practice in using their language skills with native English speakers.
The Macedonian classrooms have limited resources so volunteers are encouraged to bring educational materials. In addition, volunteer teachers are encouraged to introduce other subjects such as art, science, music, biology or other topics you feel comfortable with. They will be expected to teach about 1-2 hours a day 5 days each week.
Volunteer teachers are free to experience the many cultural and historical offerings available in the Ohrid area during the summer.
See the flyer below to contact Tom Lineham, Program Coordinator. The MSP website page includes additional photos and information about MSP projects at: www.makschools.info.

We will be celebrating the very popular Bulgarian holiday of St. George's Day (May 6th), also known as Гергьовден (Gergyovden) with a potluck picnic at 1 pm on Saturday May 9th, 2015 at Rooster Rock State Park Picnic Site A on the Columbia River so lots of you may join us! (It's about 21 miles east of Portland on I-84. Directions from Podkrepa). Bring food to share with friends and family and plan for a fun day with Portland area Bulgarian and Macedonian families. (Feel free to arrive early to enjoy more of the park and surrounding sites ahead of the potluck). All welcome! The park charges just $5 entry fee per car (кола), otherwise this event is free.
And, we still have some white t-shirts with our NEW LOGO (visible on our Facebook Page here) on them available in exchange for a $20 tax-deductible donation to Podkrepa, and we will have them with us at the picnic. So bring your cash or checks if interested in getting one!
St. George's Day is known as one of the biggest name days celebrated in Bulgaria. (Name days are very popular in Bulgaria and many are celebrated in the spring). It is a major feast day with a lot of Slavic history and tradition behind it, usually involving roasting a whole lamb. May 6 was made an official public holiday in 1880 by Alexander of Battenburg. The holiday was declared to celebrate the Bulgarian army’s victories in the Liberation War against the Ottoman Turks.
Lastly, we are also co-celebrating March 8th (Осеми Март) or International Women's Day one day early to also allow more to join us. The 8th of March is recognized with more significance in Bulgaria and other regions including Europe than in the United States. It is also known as Mother's Day in Bulgaria. This does not stop us from celebrating it here! We would not be here without women, after all. Join us!
Bulgarian Liberation Day (Ден на Освобождението на България is a very significant Public Holiday for Bulgarians, signifying liberation from the Ottoman Empire, and is traditionally celebrated in the modern era on March 3rd. We are moving our celebration to the weekend to allow more to join us.
We are co-celebrating THREE wonderful spring occasions in one day Saturday March 7th when we will combine the arrival of Baba Marta (March 1), Bulgarian Liberation Day (Ден на Освобождението на България (March 3) and International Women's Day (March 8) into one great occasion with you all!
Join us for food, friendship and another great children's presentation with music and a potluck at Podkrepa Hall 2116 N Killingsworth in Portland.
5:00 pm Bulgarche Children's cultural presentation starts promptly (don't be late!)
6:00 pm Potluck, raffle and social time for everyone
We also still have some white T-shirts with our NEW LOGO (shown on our Facebook page) on them available in exchange for a $20 tax-deductible donation to Podkrepa, as well as a NEW 1 page 2015 calendar featuring our Bulgarche program kids, so bring some money and get one before they are gone! (All items are offered in exchange for fully tax-deductible donations to Podkrepa).
The three celebrations include:
Baba Marta (Grandma March) traditionally visits March 1, when everyone dons (puts on and wears) a red & white Martenitsa (plural: Martenichki or Мартенички) signifying rebirth and good health (traditions and meaning vary a bit across regions). These handcrafted adornments are traditionally worn until the first sign of Spring comes in the form of either a blossoming tree, or the first sight of a swallow or stork when they are then placed on or tied to a blooming shrub or bush. Although spring seems to have come early to Portland this year, please don't let this stop you from sporting (wearing) a Martenitsa for a few days in early March with us anyway! (We have some мартенички available for sale you can come get early at our Rosna Kitka dance session Friday February 27th 7:00 pm also!)
Let's celebrate Трифон Зарезан & Valentine's Day!
Вино и любов - Заедно ръка за ръка!
Love and Wine - the Perfect Combination!
Bulgarians celebrate two holidays on February 14th, Saint Valentine’s and Saint Trifon!
On the day of St. Trifon “Zarezan”, the guardian of wine-growers, we celebrate our love of wine!
So, if your loved one is with you, celebrate Valentine’s Day,
if not, enjoy some good wine and forget about love!

We will forgo our usual monthly 3rd Saturday members business meeting in December in favor of our annual Podkrepa Christmas Party, open to all comers 4pm Saturday December 20th. We will begin with a performance by the children's Bulgarche language and dance program at 4 pm, followed by a visit from Santa and then a potluck meal with friends and family (bring a dish to share).
If you have something you wish Santa to present to your child, please have it wrapped with the child's name on it. Bring it to the store room earlier on the day of the party (or make arrangements with a member beforehand to get it there) so we have it ready, thanks. Santa has many gifts to present though, so please do not bring a large gift, or more than one per child. We look forward to sharing this holiday tradition with you!

See the flyer below and tell your friends! All welcome, dancing or not! See you there!
Prince Ferdinand declared Bulgaria's independence from the Ottoman Empire by a manifesto in Veliko Tarnovo on September 22, 1908. Bulgaria was then recognized as a separate state ruled under crown King Ferdinand (who went by the title of tsar) by both Turkey and the world's great powers at the time as surrounding countries fought for other scraps of the former Ottoman Empire. The day was declared a National Public Holiday by a resolution of the National Assembly on September 10th, 1998. Bulgarians everywhere celebrate the day with pride. We hope you will join us in recognizing this special day. Happy Bulgarian Independence Day!
Greetings parents and children. We hope everyone had a great summer break, and look forward to hearing about your vacations. We are restarting the 2014-2015 season of Bulgarian Language and Culture classes here at Podkrepa THIS Sunday September 14, 2014 at 12:30 pm. New & returning students can enroll at this time. We will start off by greeting our new students and families in the Bulgarian tradition of sharing bread and honey. Then we will share the new books we will use this year, and discuss this year's learning goals and answer any questions you may have. Hope to see you there!
We invite Podkrepa members to give us your feedback on the new artistic metal fencing that Dave has been trying out on the front of the property. This will help spruce up the property and better secure it during off hours. You will see various pieces appear and disappear as he keeps tweaking it to get it to fit well, be safe, and look good. (It has gotten rave reviews so far, but we will vote as a group to ultimately keep it or not.) There will be lockable gates for the driveways. See the early sample panel picture attached below (FenceTrial1.jpg), and come see it for yourself at our next members meeting Saturday July 19th, 2014.
